Flori Line Growing Instructions
1. Introduction
Floripot® and Flori Line® pot gerbera are pot gerbera selections which can now uniformly be cultivated from seed. That's why the cultivation of pot gerbera can be an interesting main product or temporary cultivated product for you and your company. Florist offers this product as seed (1000 seeds per bag) or as seedling (112 per tray and/or 144 per tray) in the following forms and colours:
F1 Hybrid pot gerbera lines
MAXI (flower size 8-11 cm) – pot size 12 cm - >>
MIDI (flower size 7-8 cm) - pot size 12 cm - >>
MINI (flower size 5-7 cm) - pot size 10 – 12 cm
• By colour (red, orange, yellow, pink, lilac/purple, white – green centre and/or black centre)
• mix (all colours, green centre and black centre)
• black centre mix
• double mix
• spider mix
The main advantages of the new Flori Line® F1 crossings / hybrids is the fact that Flori Line® F1 hybrid Maxi, Midi and Mini can now uniformly be delivered from seed. This results in uniform plant habits, such as foliage, early flowering and flower colour.
MICRO (flower size 3-5 cm) – pot size 6 – 10 cm
• by colour (red, orange, yellow, pink, lilac/purple, white – green centre centre)
• mix (all colours, green centre and black centre)
Also available: Seeds for gerbera cut flower production
• Mix
• By colour
(These seeds can be seeded in 20 cm pots)

2. Basic principles for pot gerbera cultivation
This pot gerbera culture description has been based on Western-European conditions. In this culture description, guidelines are given about growing pot gerbera from seed or seedlings. Firstly we want to explain some basis principles for professional pot gerbera cultivation:
2.1 Greenhouse conditions
2.1.1 Required equipment
• For pot gerbera cultivation you need a well equipped greenhouse (glasshouse or plastic greenhouse) where you can monitor the climate through ventilation, screening and when necessary, heating. Furthermore you also need culture tables, cultivation mats or different systems on the ground with an ebb and flow system. When watering from above, please be aware of the danger for fungus mould that could grow within the centre of the plant.
• The greenhouse must be closed through plastic and/or glass to protect the plants from the danger of insects and to prevent any weeds blowing inside the greenhouse.
• Pot gerberas are sensitive to water therefore it is important to make sure that irrigation is applied at the right times (in the morning or late afternoon/early night). It is very important that the crop is dry when the night falls.
2.1.2 Climate
• Depending on the stage the young plant is in, the ideal situation for pot gerbera cultivation is reached when the greenhouse temperature lies between 15°C and 25°C. This temperature should only reach a minimum of 13°C and a maximum of 30°C. The average temperature calculation for pot gerbera culture calculates an average day temperature of 18/19°C . If the temperature lies 1°C above the given heating temperature (heat-line) it is time to ventilate. The night temperature should not be too high, to stimulate bud induction. A temperature which is too low might cause a slower growth. The ideal night temperature lies around 15-18°C. High night temperatures can trigger a stress reaction in the plant, which means they are more susceptible to fungus infections at that time. This could cause a more vegetative growth.
• When growing young plants from seed the humidity in the first week (tunnel phase) lies around 99%. The humidity (RV) in the greenhouse must be around 70-80% when hardening the pot gerbera seedlings. In the detailed description this will be explained per stage.
• The ideal light intensity when seeding pot gerbera is 150-200 Watt (approx. 5.000 –10.000 lux). After potting this value lies around approx. 400 Watt (35.000 Lux). Above these figures screening must be applied to prevent higher light intensity/sun radiation.
• During wintertime it is recommended to use artificial lighting in order to maintain the necessary product quality. Approx. 5.500 Lux can be added to prolong the day length.
2.2 Used substrate
It is recommended to obtain an airy and moist substrate mix when seeding pot gerbera seeds, with a pH between 5,5 and 6,0 and an EC of 0,7 m/s – 1,0 m/s. These are ideal values to ease the intake of micro elements. When having a high pH the crop will start growing chlorotic (mainly yellow leaves).
Baltic white peat 10/20 0,25 m3
Irish peat , fraction 1 0,45 m3
Garden peat-fibre RHP 0,15 m3
Normal perlite (No. 3) 0,15 m3
A mixture with good drainage is of great importance.
Please take the fraction into account !
Alternatives:
• Coco + 55-60% course rice husk
• Extra course coco mixed with perlite
2.3 Basic fertilisation (fixed fertilisers)
Dolokal 3,0 KG
P.G. mix /// 12-14-24 /// 1,0 KG
Patentkali 0,5 KG
Kalksalpeter 0,2 KG
The nutrient mix N:K is in summer 2 : 1 and in winter 1,5 : 1.
N mainly influences vegetative growth.
K mainly influences the flower size.
